Its election 2009 and after the D Day its time for Horse trading. We have seen this happening time and again and this is the same scenario that the Common man has to encounter after he has done his job. What else can he do after Elections.
These days I believe people are slowly losing faith in the whole system. Elections have been mar ed with Violence, Cash for votes, Cast clashes and every year the voter turnout seems to have decreased . This year too Elections are No different.
Alliances are made and broken in a jiffy. Some parties are always in power no matter if its NDA or the UPA is at power. So in these cases we really doubt if they really have any stand for themselves and the most obvious thing is to mint money.
Come Elections and only those who are very keen on voting are the first time voters. No doubt they are excited in exercising their franchise for the first time ever . Their hopes or short lived and they are made to feel as to why have they voted.
I strongly feel that to avoid all the mishaps that happen like cash for votes, wooing the poor with gifts, we need to bring in some filtering mechanism by leveraging on the fundamental tool in Education.
HOW ?
Well you might really be surprised if I say that a minimum qualification is required for voting. Why not ? As it is a mandate to have a education qualification even for a peon post in govt, why not have it for voting. Here is my recommendation.
1. Have voting rights to those who have the skills to read and write their native language - Why ? Reading newspapers do help in identifying the real nature of our beloved politicians.
2. Set an age limit for politicians to retire. If govt jobs have an age limit , why not the job of running the govt. No more grandpas pls. Relax at home.
3. Bring down the official expenditure ceiling allowed for a candidate.
4. No parties based on caste in elections.
5. Encourage Debating as in US. Let them face each other and answer each other.
6. Restriction on the Parties in a state. Not every Siva ,Ram and lakshman can start a party(localisation of tom, dick and harry ...heee.hee)
Try this out....Better results can be expected. but who is to bell the cat. !!!
